Saffron Surge in Marathwada: BJP Sweeps Sambhajinagar, Parbhani & Dharashiv; Congress Retains Latur Amidst ZP Poll Battle

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has cemented its dominance in the Marathwada region, emerging as the single largest party in three out of the four key Zilla Parishads (ZPs) that went to polls—Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Parbhani, and Dharashiv.

However, the "Deshmukh bastion" of Latur resisted the saffron wave, with the Congress emerging as the number one party, though it fell short of a clear majority. The results, declared on Monday (February 9, 2026), have given a massive boost to the ruling Mahayuti alliance (BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP), which has collectively swept rural Maharashtra.

District-Wise Breakdown

1. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Mahayuti’s Clear Mandate In a decisive victory, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has secured a comfortable majority in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Zilla Parishad.

  • The Numbers: Out of the total 63 seats, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 23 seats. Its alliance partner, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), performed impressively, winning 20 seats.

  • The Verdict: Together, the Mahayuti holds 44 seats, well above the majority mark of 32. The opposition MVA struggled, with Shiv Sena (UBT) managing only 9 seats.

  • Key Factor: BJP District President Sanjay Khambayate attributed the win to the "double-engine sarkar" effect and the strong network of local MLAs like Prashant Bamb.

2. Parbhani: BJP in Driver's Seat Parbhani, often seen as a politically volatile district, saw the BJP making significant inroads.

  • The Numbers: The BJP won 24 out of 54 seats, stopping just short of the halfway mark. The NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) secured 15 seats, while the Shiv Sena won 5.

  • The Scenario: With the support of its Mahayuti partners, the BJP is set to comfortably install its President in the ZP.

3. Dharashiv: A Tight Contest In Dharashiv (Osmanabad), the battle was intense, but the BJP managed to edge past its rivals.

  • The Numbers: The BJP bagged 19 seats out of 55, emerging as the single largest party. The Shiv Sena won 15 seats.

  • The Upset: The Shiv Sena (UBT), led by MP Omraje Nimbalkar, faced a setback, managing to win only 7 seats despite high expectations.

4. Latur: Congress Defends its Turf Latur remained the solitary bright spot for the opposition in the region.

  • The Numbers: The Congress party emerged as the single largest party, winning 23 out of 59 seats.

  • The Twist: Despite being the largest party, Congress is short of the majority mark of 30. The BJP (18 seats), NCP (12 seats), and Shiv Sena (1 seat) have a combined strength of 31 seats.

  • The Power Game: While Congress has the moral victory of being the largest party, political pundits predict a thrilling post-poll maneuver where the Mahayuti could join forces to snatch power from the Congress in its own backyard.

Overall Impact

The results are a ringing endorsement for the state government. The BJP-led Mahayuti has won 552 out of 731 Zilla Parishad seats across Maharashtra, decimating the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in rural pockets. For the opposition, the inability to convert anti-incumbency into votes, except in pockets like Latur and Kolhapur, remains a worrying sign.
